He says... Let me start by saying that this movie is not for you if you are turned off by movies like Knocked Up, Superbad, Harold and Kumar go pretty much anywhere, or anything by Kevin Smith (a man who I personally think uses twice the amount of words than necessary to get a laugh, but I digress - this isn't his movie, so we'll save him for another time). This movie made me laugh like a retarded kid at a sticker book convention. If that last sentence offended you, don't see this movie. If you laughed, chances are you're gonna like this one. Strong comedic performances from Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Sean WIlliam Scott, and Jane Lynch. The kids in the movie are also very good. She says... If you can handle the vulgarity and language in this movie, it really is hilarious. I LOVED it. The humor is amazingly witty and perfectly timed. The story line is convicing and draws you in. I would watch this movie again if I needed a good belly laugh. Every character that was introduced or characters that they interacted with were irrational and laughable but amazingly pleasant and likeable. Watch it- but we did warn you about the vulgarity and language. Enjoy!

This wasn't one of my favorites. I thought it was kind of corny. But my dislike of this movie might have had a little to do with the fact that every time Renee Zellweger came on screen I shut my eyes (just kidding she's great just kidding she annoys me just kidding she should be president just kidding she should be dead just kidding just kidding just kidding). For more about how I feel about her, see this review.

However, I did enjoy the period aspects and a tad of the "history" that they added to this film. It was pleasant to see John Krasinski (our fave from The Office) on the big screen, but I gotta keep it real - if this movie came on TV, I would change the channel. I felt like it was a waste of my time, and I was disappointed that it seemed all the humor parts were only in the preview. sigh. I'll get over it.

This was probably a one-timer for me too. I liked it, but I probably wouldn't watch it over and over. I will say this, I definitely prefer George Clooney in comedies. As Steph said, John Krasinski is good to see in film, although his character is a bit of a pompous jerk. There isn't much original here. It's your basic old-guy still trying to prove something and win the girl picture. Meh.

MILD SPOILER WARNING* - the contents of this review border on spoiling the ending of the movie. We try not to do this in our reviews, but due to the trajectory of this story and how it made us both feel, we felt like it was important to at least hint at the ending. If you don't want even a hint of how this movie ends, click here and continue on your way...

I like this as a story, but I really didn't like this film. I enjoyed watching the previews better than actually watching the movie. The script was very typical of a true story drama movie, and it had some slow parts. Dr. Kearns (played by Greg Kinnear) kept pushing as an inventor until he got what he wanted. I understand this, but I couldn't help but ask 'at what cost?' His wife and children suffered so much as he went crazy (which is where the jumpy story starts), spent time searching, waiting until his day came, but that day came, and nothing really did change except 11 years of his wife and children's lives. At the end most normal viewers will probably be conflicted as to who really won.

OMG SEE IT!!!! It is worth your time AND money. It's charming, heart-wrenching, and satisfying. There is a very cool music video at the end that is incredibly enjoyable. I agree, for the first time in awhile,100% with the Academy's decision on the eight awards that it gave to this movie.
Parent's corner...
Violence: Yes, there are violent scenes, but not too much gore.
Sex: No nudity, but there's a scene in a brothel that implies that sex is going on. Nothing direct.
Language: Mr. Rogers Gym teacher Vietnam War Platoon Leader
MPAA Rating: R for some violence, disturbing images and language.
Sociability: The story might be a little boring for younger kids, but tweens, teens, and adults of all ages will love watching this film together. There are limited amounts of subtitles.

This isn't the first time Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino have been on screen together, and I would argue this isn't the best example of it, but that being said, they go together like chocolate and peanut butter. They are both great actors in their own right, and they play off each other like old pros ought to. Neither one is in his prime anymore, and Pacino seems to be mailing it in at times. It feels like he's lost a step or two, and all through the movie, you get the feeling that both these guys are getting older and looking forward to retirement. Whenever acting legends of this caliber play every-man roles, you run the risk of the characters not being believable. This happens here to some extent. I never lost the idea that I was watching DeNiro and Pacino play roles. You want to be watching the characters, not the actors. If you just really like DeNiro or Pacino, you'll probably like this film, but I'm not in love with it.
She Says...
I really liked this movie. I would watch it again and I am going to tell everybody I know to watch it, starting with you. It was a wonderful movie in every way. I LOVE Bobby & Al, and their characters did not disappoint. There is very good chemistry with the other actors as well. If you are in the mood for a good suspense drama, I think you will love this too.
Parent's Corner...

I really liked this movie. It is a perfect action flick. It has believable characters and nice special effects. It has some elements of the type of special effects we saw in The Matrix, but it flows nice and fits in this movie. The story line is also good. It is easy to follow. It is set in New York City. The directing and sequencing is typically quick - fast motions with a loud soundtrack. It has a nice twist of loving the bad-guy assassin and really rooting for him to be "badder". Angelina Joline, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy really fit well into the roles they play. Good movie!
Parent's corner...
Violence: Um, yeah, that's basically all it is.
Sex: It's sexy, but not over the top. I think you see Angelina's bare butt once. Well, one assumes it's hers.
Language: Mr. Rogers Gym Teacher Vietnam War Platoon Leader
MPAA Rating: R for strong bloody violence throughout, pervasive language and some sexuality.
Sociability: Just depends on the crowd and the mood you are in.

I LOVED this movie. I love a good movie that portrays a deep love connection and love affair that is real and not just a fling - a love that changes who you are inside and inspires you and brings out the hidden places in your heart. This film also accurately portrays the pain that divorce causes to children and a very accurate picture of loss. Richard Gere plays the leading male role, and while I don't think he is spectacular, he did fine in this role. I absolutely love Diane Lane, and she fits this role perfectly. This movie is from the book Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks, whom I love. I thought the movie was very accurate scene for scene adaptation from the book. It is very similar in tone to The Notebook and Message In A Bottle, so if you liked those movies, you will probably enjoy this one as well. The basic story line is this: Two divorcees who have experienced painful personal situations are brought together at a friend's Bed and Breakfast on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. While they are there, a mild hurricane hits the Outer Banks, at the same time emotions and buried pain come to the surface for some self discovery. Their time together brings deliverance and needed connection with each other, which subsequently brings a deep sense of joy and freedom. This freedom allows what was buried to come to the surface for personal change for each of them. I cried at the end - mostly because Diane Lane's depiction of someone who has lost a loved one is very deep and heart wrenching and incredibly accurate. Having been a young widow, I value appropriate and clear presentation of these emotions. This was an excellent movie and I recommend it. Especially if you have recently suffered a loss or a break up. just sayin...
He Says:
Richard Gere's not one of my favorite actors, by a long shot. Thankfully, this movie has a lot more Diane Lane in it than it does him. The story basically goes exactly as expected from the beginning, even for one who's never read a Nicholas Sparks book - which would be me. I saw The Notebook though, so I knew what I was in for. It borders on being overly sentimental, but again, if you are prepared for it, you're not overwhelmed by it. I thought that the depiction of the impact of divorce on kids was accurate and an important message to deliver. Children think - and secretly hope - they can bring their parents back together for months, sometimes years, and when they finally realize how little power they have, their world tends to crash down around them.
The metaphor of the storm blowing in might seem a bit too cute considering the story line, but this movie never makes any pretense of being anything other than a chick-flick. There...I said it. I enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed watching it with my wife and handing her Kleenex. But this movie wasn't made for a man to watch - at least not by himself. Men, if your wife wants to see this, you could do worse than agree to it. You won't miss the fact that no one gets his head shot off or cussed out. But she will owe you a horror movie.
Sex: No nudity, but there are some sexual situations
Awkward moments: Not really
Sociability: Kids would be bored with this. It would be a good date movie.
Language scale: Mr. Rogers - Mormon - Gym teacher - Sailor - Vietnam War Platoon Leader
MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some sensuality.

I liked this movie mostly because I would watch Westerns with my dad growing up (God rest his soul), and so I have a tender spot for Western outlaw movies. I am a tad ADD, so I was easily distracted and would lose track and have to re-enter the movie drama. But over all if you enjoy a good western, catchy personal humor (tough guys talking soft), good-guy / bad-guy conflict, then you will enjoy this movie. It is not a fast-paced movie. It goes in strides like riding a tame horse. The basic setup of the story is that a bad guy is bullying a small town, so the town brings in expert Marshalls Virgil and Everett, played by Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen. Then the movie hits an ugly turn for me when Allie (Renee Zellwegger) appears. There is something about Renee that makes my skin crawl, literally. I think I am prettier than she is, she acts the exact same in every movie (therefore I think "I" should get paid a brazillion dollars to do what she does)...and that silly giggle of hers that she brings into every character is super-annoying. I am sure she is a very nice person in real life, but I guess I don't get any joy watching her on screen. The classic damsel in distress and that tiny, "Oh, take care of me" attitude I just don't like...
Sigh.
Her character being captured adds to the motivation of Ed Harris (he has a soft spot for her) releasing the bully back over to his men. Then the Marshalls... <removed for spoilers> ...The twist and turns are typical of westerns and it ends with a classic "my-gun-is-bigger-than-your-gun" show down.
He Says:
The Westerns I have seen (and they are few, trust me) always seem to paint the heroes as these larger-than-life figures whose motivations are as pure as the driven snow. That's why this movie really felt like a fresh take on the genre. Ed Harris (who also directed this film) clearly made a point to develop the humanity of the characters in a way that makes the audience actually feel a sort of kinship with the leading man. Virgil is clearly not the smartest guy on screen. He doesn't necessarily have the purest intentions. He gets flustered by women. He often struggles to find words (a great use of comic relief). Allie (Zellwegger's character) also is much more plausible than the typical heroine. Simply put, she's a slut, and she'll sleep with whoever is the top dog at the time, out of a driving desire to be secure and taken care of. Everett (played by Mortensen) turns out to be much more heroic than anyone else, which explains why it's his voice that serves as narrator at the top and bottom of the film. Jeremy Irons is here in the film doing what he does best - playing a world-class dick. I recommend this film even to those who wouldn't necessary sit down to watch a Western.
Sex: Brief backside nudity, no simulated sex, but there is clear implication in several scenes.
Awkward moments: The humanity of the characters is evident, but it doesn't get awkward.
Sociability: We'd probably watch this with just about anyone.
Language scale: Mr. Rogers - Mormon - Gym teacher - Sailor - Vietnam War Platoon Leader
MPAA Rating: R for some violence and language.

There are a few actors whose films I will go see without knowing anything up front. Edward Norton is in that category for me. Add Jon Voight to the mix, and you have the makings of a gem. For the most part, this movie is better than your average cop corruption drama. The acting is solid. The feel of the film fits the story. The story is predictable, but again, strong. Now to a major drawback for many of our good readers: The F-bomb is so prominent in this flick that it might as well have gotten listed in the credits. I am serious. F***, if I counted correctly, got used as no less than 5 of the 8 different parts of speech (sorry preposition, conjunction, and pronoun). I understand that this word was in the running for a Best Supporting Actor award this year. I am not f***ing kidding. This f***ing movie was full of f***ing f-bombs. F****! ...The kids liked it though. ;-)
She Says:
The directing and scenes are that dark type of shadow visually. It does have good acting and that quick directing back and forth. It is full of good cop - bad cop family dynamics - generations of cops. If you want action, intense relationships, and watching bad come to the light, you will like this movie. Sometimes the talking goes really fast, so we put on the subtitles and that helped me be able to follow better. This wasn't my favorite movie, and the story line has been used before, but if you enjoy seeing Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, or Edward Norton, then you would enjoy watching them in these roles.
Parent's corner...
Violence: Tons of it - very graphic
Sex: Some nudity and one short graphic sex scene with noises.
Awkward moments: The whole movie is an awkward moment if you are watching with the wrong people.
Sociability: Adults only. We wouldn't watch this with our parents either, mostly because the language is so salty that they would probably walk out.
Language scale: Mr. Rogers - Mormon - Gym teacher - Sailor - Vietnam War Platoon Leader
MPAA Rating: R for strong violence, pervasive language and brief drug content.
